Narcissus and Goldmund – A Tale

Hermann Hesse’s story about the contrast between the intellectual and the sensual man, and their productive union in the artist, is a modern interpretation of the Don Juan and Casanova motif. It is also a hymn to friendship, full of adventures set in a timeless Middle Ages. Monastic and urban art life, gypsy girls and wandering poets: “All these elements of German Romantic storytelling are united here in rare completeness” (Rolf Schneider). Years before National Socialism misused Germany’s cultural traditions, Hesse portrayed in this novel the idea of Germany and the German spirit that he had carried within him since childhood, and to which he “confessed his love, precisely because I so deeply hate everything that today is considered typically German,” as he wrote in 1933. During Hesse’s lifetime, Narcissus and Goldmund was his most successful book. From 1930 to the present day, total German sales have exceeded two million copies. The novel has now been translated into thirty languages.
